What is a Bowen treatment?A Bowen treatment consists of a series of gentle rolling type movements on skin (or sometimes through light clothing), with the client lying on a bed or comfortable treatment couch (or sitting if this is not possible). Initially a brief history of the client is taken then a treatment session usually lasts from 45 minutes to one hour. During treatment there are periods when the client is left resting for a few moments allowing the body to rebalance itself and commence the healing process. Two or three treatments at regular intervals are sufficient to achieve lasting relief from even long standing pain, although further treatments may sometimes be required. To receive maximum benefit whilst receiving Bowen it is recommended that other physical therapies are not mixed i.e. massage, reflexology, physiotherapy, etc.Treatment frequently results in a deep sense of overall relaxation, allowing the body to recharge and balance itself. There are many theories as to how the Bowen Technique works, but none that completely explain its holistic effect and often outstanding results. How does it work? Bowen is not a form of massage, it treats the whole person. The practitioner uses thumbs and fingers making rolling type movements which activate specific muscles, soft tissue and energy within the body. Bowen treatments set up the communication with your brain and your body. So simply stated, the Bowen Technique allows the body to reset and heal itself. The Bowen practitioner is merely a catalyst, setting the stimulus in motion for the body to do its work. Because the human body is so amazing, self healing can often be achieved with minimal outside influence. I really do believe that our bodies are on 'our side' and with a little encouragement from us it will heal itself, we just have to listen and encourage it. We don't question that our immune system will heal a cut or set a broken bone all we need to do is create the right environment for it to do so, Bowen encourages your body to do just this.
